How To Obtain your Temporary Permit: (required for behind-the-wheel lessons)
First visit your nearest OSHP Drivier Examination Station or BMV (DX).
Take a vision examination and a written examination also known as the knowledge test, rather than purchasing a temporary packet before taking the test. A temporary photo will also be taken at this time. Customers will be required to show two acceptable documents before taking the test:
Birth certificate
Social Security card
Parent/guardian with 2 forms of ID.
Vision Screening Areas
In order to qualify for a driver license or motorcycle license a driver must be screened in two visual areas. These areas are the acuity, and horizontal fields. An applicant who must meet the Federal 391 medical standards and is applying for a school bus endorsement or commercial driver license must meet the acuity, horizontal, and color test fields. Unrestricted License: Generally, the minimum vision for most drivers to qualify for an unrestricted license is an uncorrected acuity reading of 20/40 (both eyes together). A Horizontal Field is the amount of visual field, measured in degrees, that an applicant can see in each eye. To qualify for a license an applicant must have a total visual field of at least 115 degrees. There are two types of horizontal field:
1. Temporal Field - The degrees of field that an applicant can see to the side of their head.
2. Nasal Field - The degrees of field that an applicant can see across the bridge of their nose. This field is only screened when just one of the applicant's eyes can see at least 70 degrees temporal.
Unrestricted License - Generally, most drivers to qualify for an unrestricted license must have a temporal horizontal field of 70 degrees in each eye.
After you pass the written and vision tests, do the following:
A. Apply for a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) at your local Deputy Registrar. The fee will be $21.00. If your current driver license has expired more than 6 months and within 2 years, the fee will be $24.00. See Driver License Fees. Take with you documentary proof of your age and social security number, (if one has ever been assigned). See Acceptable Documents.
B. If you are under 18 years of age you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or person having legal custody, or, if there is no parent or guardian a responsible person who is willing to assume the obligations imposed under Rule 4501:1-1-19 of the Ohio Administrative Code. The co-signer must also take documentary proof of his identification. See Acceptable Documents.
C. Once the TIPIC is issued, you will be able to practice driving but only if you are accompanied by a licensed driver in the seat next to you.
Results of the knowledge test will be stored electronically and will be varified at a BMV Deputy Registrar (DR) before a temporary permit or endorsement is issued. Customers will be able to purchase the temporary permit from the DR only after successfully passing the knowledge test. The Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws is still available for pick up at DRs, DXs or by downloading on www.bmv.ohio.gov to study for the knowledge test.
Your I.D. card from now on makes up your permit to drive. It says at the top Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card. You must carry the I.D. card with you while driving.
